I was talking about a comment that Matt made about a completely different class of paid ads... AdWords. Also, although I do agree with your issues, I think you misinterpreted something Matt said (I think Any got it wrong too). When Matt referred to "a site which appears to be promoting a specific manufacturer of medical equipment via paid posts" I'm pretty sure he was actually talking about the target site that was trying to rank, not the post that contained the links.
